Someday Somehow started the way most good things round here do — two people who had spent their careers in fermentation deciding the gluten-free shelf deserved a lot better.
Ryan came up through Margaret River wine and craft beer. A decade of vintages teaches you a particular kind of patience: balance beats brute force, and the finish matters as much as the first impression. Beau came up through the other door — nineteen years across brewing, kombucha and gin distilling, the kind of career where you learn how flavour actually gets built, batch by batch, from the inside.
Between the two of us, thirty-odd years of fermenting things. Which turned out to be exactly what the problem needed.
The problem, if you have not lived it, goes like this. Every gluten-free beer we tried was suitable for something, not made for anyone. Thin, apologetic, the can left at the back of the fridge at the end of the night. The people who needed it deserved better, and — this is the part that stuck with us — so did everyone else at the table.
A beer you have to make excuses for is not really a beer for sharing.
We reckoned it could be the best thing on the shelf instead.
So: two years in the brewery. Hundreds of trial batches — more than our elbows would like — working out a multi-grain method built around sorghum and quinoa, reworking ingredients in-house, until the beer stopped tasting like a substitute and just tasted good. Not good for gluten free. Good, full stop.
Then we built the brewery to match the idea. Not a side-range bolted onto a normal brewery, sharing tanks and hoping for the best — a dedicated brewery in Vasse, in the Margaret River Region, with no gluten anywhere in the building. Built that way on purpose, from day one.
Today there are nine beers — from the easy-drinking Solid to the non-alc Forever — poured at the Vasse cellar door, the Margaret River Farmers Market, online, and across WA. Every one of them made to be chosen on flavour first, by anyone, and finished to the last sip.
Beer for the whole journey. That is the short version of how it started. The longer version involves a lot of cleaning.
